I've had some comments taking me to task for the lyric in Neda (You Will Not Defeat The People) that refers to Neda not "...wearing the hi jab...". It's been pointed out that she was, in fact, wearing the hi jab. That's true. It's also been pointed out that the cause of the unrest in Iran has nothing to do with the wearing (or not) of the hi jab. That's a larger topic. The role of woman in current Iranian society certainly seems to be part of the debate, to say the very least.

In any case, I meant no disrespect to women (...I referred to Neda as a "girl", but remember I wrote this song very quickly...) and I meant and mean no disrespect to the religion Islam or to the cultural values of the Iranian people.

I am a pop/folk singer and songwriter. What I do, sometimes well, is capture a moment, or a feeling, or use symbols effectively. I think I must have expressed something in this song that many folks can relate to and with. If I can summarize what that something was, in a few words, I would use these ones: injustice is a universal concern, and the insistence on justice ought to be a human right, universally.

Finally (for now) let me share this: it's been great having my song recognized, but it's also exposed me to the negativity that seems to ooze through the void that is cyberspace. Whether it's political disagreement or folks piling on to the dead corpse of Michael Jackson for one last kick, there seems little doubt we remain in the Age Of Nasty. I just think we cannot lose by trying to take it a little easier on ourselves and each other. Peace.
